Rapinoe started performing in the Australian W-League with Sydney Football Club FC after which she returned into her home in the United States. She next played for Seattle Washington Sounders Women. She later became a member of the National Women's Soccer League NWSL (formerly the WPS) which formed in response to the WPS's dissolution. Rapinoe gained the status of one of the club's top scorers, and later became the Captain of the squad. Her contribution contributed to with the U.S. Women's World Cup win successive championships between 2015 and 2019. In 2018, she took on the role of cocaptain for the team. Rapinoe was awarded two bronze medals in her part in the United States' 4-3 win over Australia in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Japan has been postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 viral spread.
